I have a family of six.  Two of us are vegan and the rest still eat meat.  How do I cook for us all?

If people are fed food that tastes great and fills them, they will be usually be happy!  The most important thing is to not make a big deal about it.  No announcements that “this is vegan!”  And, no winks or remarks between you and the other vegan in your household.   This is not a “we win, you lose” situation.  You can all win together!  Simply prepare delicious, nutritious, and appealing food and serve it all with love and compassion!

How to do that?  It depends somewhat on your family and what kinds of foods they like to eat.  Is your family used to eating a variety of foods, including different ethnic foods?  If so, continue serving dishes from around the world – simply leave out the meat or use a meat analog.  (A meat analog is a product that may be made from soy, wheat, pea protein, or konjac root powder, and mimics meat in look, texture and taste.)  Serve spaghetti and add meatballs if you want (Nate’s is an excellent brand that has vegan meatballs – check out the freezer section – or make your own).  One of my “have to have meat” brother-in-laws thought Nate's meatballs was real meat for 6 months – until my Mom spilled the vegan beans!.

Make chilis, hearty soups, and stews.  Prepare casserole style dishes such as manicotti (using seasoned tofu instead of cheese), and pans of enchiladas.  When people eat a dish drowned in a great sauce they really don’t notice what’s underneath it!  See the recipe section of the website for ideas.  Again, the most important thing I can suggest is to simply do it without fanfare.  If asked, “Does this have meat in it?” by a person who thinks they must have meat, smile and say “I don’t answer that question anymore – try it and see if you like it!”  Know that you are improving their health and yours with every healthy vegan dish that you prepare.
